Soundtrack Review: Insurgent

insurgent

The second installment of the best-selling Divergent trilogy hits theaters tomorrow, and here’s what you can hear on the soundtrack:

1) Holes in the Sky — M83 and HAIM: This is a pretty interesting track. It begins celestially with swooping instrumentals and haunting harmonies before dropping down into a more steady beat. At this point it’s your typical ballad. The beginning is what really makes this stand out — after the drums kick in, it becomes a bit too sleepy and predicable for my taste. 3/5

Soundtrack Review: Fifty Shades of Grey

fifty shades of grey

Fifty Shades of Grey was released this past weekend, and Entertainment Weekly just reported that the accompanying soundtrack had the biggest debut since Michael Jackson’s This Is It back in 2009. So, without further ado, here’s a track-by-track review of the album:

1) I Put a Spell On You – Annie Lennox: This cover of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins original provides a really solid start to this soundtrack. If this is the sound the movie is aiming for, the rest of this album should be pretty good. Lennox’s version is more toned down as compared to Hawkins’s, but the raw vocal performance is still there and still engaging. 5/5

I’m back!

jimmy fallon thank you

I want to start off this post by saying (well, yelling) THANK YOU. The amount of kindness and love I’ve received from those who read my last post has been unreal. I sat down and tried to work out my thoughts about three times before I was actually able to get something out that felt right, and the process was incredibly cathartic for me. Helping myself was just a bonus, though. Writing has been near and dear to my heart for a while, and I’m so grateful to be able to touch others’ lives with my words. As I previously mentioned, if I can help one person find comfort amidst pain, I’ve completed my mission. So, to everyone out there who’s looked at my blog and even read a post or two, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now, I’d like to officially announce the return of Reel vs. Record. I’ll be back next Thursday, 1/29 at 7 p.m. with a new post! A little reminder of what’s ahead:

With that, I bid you adieu. See you next week!

Edited 1/22: Apostrophe mistake! The day I catch all these little mistakes before I post will be magical.

I am Groot.

guardians of the galaxy rvrPicking one song to feature from Guardians of the Galaxy proved to be way too difficult, so I chose two. The success of this soundtrack has been massive – it unseated even Frozen from the top of the Billboard Soundtrack chart and is the first compilation soundtrack to ever reach number one on Billboard according to Rolling Stone. To say the use of music in this movie was well-done is an understatement, which is precisely why I had such a hard time featuring just one song.

For these purposes, I chose both “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone and “I Want You Back” by Jackson 5. These two songs play significant roles in the movie – one provides viewers with one of their first impressions and the other lands a final impression.
